The plate heat exchanger is the workhorse of the engine room cooling system. A stack of thin corrugated plates, sealed by elastomer gaskets and compressed in a bolted frame, transfers heat between seawater or the central fresh-water circuit and the medium being cooled — jacket water, lube oil, scavenge air pre-coolers and fresh-water generators all rely on them. Because the plates are thin and the gap is narrow, these units carry a large duty in a small footprint, which is exactly why a fouled or leaking unit shows up fast as rising temperatures across the system.

Plates are pressed from stainless 316, 254 SMO or titanium depending on the medium and the chloride exposure. Each model has a specific corrugation pattern and pressing depth, so a plate is never universal — it must match the brand, the model and the plate count on the frame. Seawater-side duty almost always favours titanium to resist chloride pitting, while fresh-water and oil duty commonly runs on stainless. We confirm the alloy before we quote.
Gaskets are the most replaced item on any plate pack. NBR suits oil and general water duty, EPDM handles hotter water and steam-adjacent service, and HNBR is specified for higher temperatures. They are supplied clip-on (snap into the plate groove) or glue-on (bonded with a specified adhesive) depending on the generation of the unit. Hardened, flattened or weeping gaskets are the usual cause of inter-stream leakage and external drips.

Class-driven and warranty repairs typically call for genuine plates and gaskets. OEM-equivalent parts give the same fit and material at lower cost for routine overhauls. Where the OEM quotes a long lead time on a discontinued model, a reconditioned plate pack recovered and re-certified from Alang ship-recycling stock can keep the vessel sailing.
