Two-stroke: MC versus ME-C
The single most important question on any MAN B&W order is whether the engine is an MC or an ME. The MC and MC-C are camshaft-controlled — fuel pump, fuel cam, chain drive and mechanical exhaust-valve gear. The ME-C, ME-B and ME-GI are electronically controlled, replacing all of that with a hydraulic cylinder unit (HCU), electronic fuel valves and hydraulically actuated exhaust valves. Liners, covers, crowns and bearings are broadly common by bore, but injection and actuation parts are entirely different — always give us your exact MC or ME designation.
Four-stroke: the L-series
