Every Sulzer two-stroke line became legacy after Wärtsilä absorbed New Sulzer Diesel in 1997, so factory production of these RD, RND and RTA crosshead engines has long ended — yet a large installed base of 1970s–2000s bulkers, tankers and container ships still trades and still needs parts. Akasaka spare parts

Akasaka Diesels has built marine engines at Yaizu, Shizuoka since 1910 and manufactures two distinct families: its own low- and medium-speed four-stroke main engines in the A, AX, AT, AH, K, E and U types, and Mitsubishi-designed UEC low-speed two-stroke crosshead engines, built under licence since 1960. Four-stroke outputs run from 749 kW to 3,309 kW, and licensed UEC two-strokes from 1,655 kW to 11,040 kW. They are common in coastal and short-sea cargo vessels and tankers, and in fishing vessels and ferries. We supply cylinder liners, pistons, heads, bearings and fuel-injection parts.

Niigata spare parts

Niigata has built marine diesel engines in Japan since the early twentieth century, and the business now sits within IHI Power Systems. The medium-speed four-stroke range covers the 25HX, 28HX and AHX families in in-line and vee configurations, serving as main engines in coasters, tugs, ferries and fishing vessels and as auxiliary generator sets across a great deal of Japanese-built tonnage. Niigata also built SEMT-Pielstick PA-series engines under licence. Older Niigata plant is now supported almost entirely through the aftermarket, so we supply cylinder liners, pistons, heads, bearings and fuel-injection parts.

Cylinder liner

The liner forms the running surface the piston rides on and seals the combustion chamber against peak pressures around 140–145 bar. It wears through abrasive scuffing, cold-corrosion at the top and bore-polishing that opens up clearances and drives up cylinder-oil consumption — we hold genuine, OEM-equivalent and reconditioned liners across the common bore sizes.

Piston & piston crown

The crown takes the full combustion load and gas temperature on its top land while the skirt guides the piston in the liner. Crowns fail by thermal-fatigue cracking, burn-away of the rim and widening of the ring grooves — we supply new crowns and skirts, plus reconditioned units re-machined back to OEM tolerance.

Piston rod & stuffing box

On a crosshead two-stroke the piston rod passes through the stuffing box in the diaphragm, sealing the scavenge space above from the crankcase below. Its scraper rings and gas-tight sealing rings wear over time and let cylinder oil pass up into the scavenge space or combustion gas leak down into the crankcase — a scavenge-fire and oil-consumption risk. We supply piston rods, complete stuffing-box units and scraper/sealing ring kits so the seal is fully restored at overhaul, in genuine, OEM-equivalent and Alang-reconditioned form.

Piston rings

Rings seal combustion gas against the liner wall and manage the oil film, so they carry both the compression seal and the scavenging efficiency of the unit. They wear flat, lose radial tension and can collapse or break once the oil film breaks down — a fast-moving consumable we stock as genuine and OEM-equivalent ring sets.

Cylinder cover

The cover closes the top of the cylinder and carries the exhaust valve, fuel valves and the starting-air and safety-valve bores. It suffers thermal cracking around the valve bores and gas-side corrosion under sustained high load — we supply genuine and reconditioned covers, re-drilled and pressure-tested before dispatch.

Exhaust valve

The exhaust valve vents combustion gas every cycle and runs red-hot, which is why the spindle is a nickel-based Nimonic alloy and the seat is Stellite-faced. Its failure modes are seat burning and blow-by, stem corrosion and loss of valve rotation — one of the highest-demand wear items, supplied as genuine, OEM-equivalent and reconditioned (re-ground) spindles, seats and complete valve cages.

Fuel valve / injector

The fuel valve atomises the injected fuel into the chamber and sets the spray pattern that governs clean, complete combustion. Nozzles wear open at the spray holes, lose their correct opening pressure and begin to dribble or coke up — a frequent overhaul consumable we supply as genuine and OEM-equivalent nozzles and reconditioned complete valves.

Fuel injection pump

The fuel injection pump meters and pressurises the fuel delivered to each injector every cycle. Its lapped plunger and barrel, suction and delivery valves run at very high pressure and wear from cat-fines and low-lubricity fuel, causing injection-timing drift, low peak pressure and hard starting. We supply plunger-and-barrel elements, valves and complete pump housings — genuine, OEM-equivalent and reconditioned — for mechanical engines, plus the fuel-pressure and booster units used on electronically-controlled ME and X-series engines.

Connecting-rod & main bearings

These bearings carry the crankshaft, crankpin and crosshead loads on a hydrodynamic oil film, lined with white-metal (tin babbitt) or a tri-metal overlay. They fail by wiping, fatigue cracking of the overlay and pick-up whenever oil pressure or cleanliness drops — renewed at major overhauls and supplied as genuine and OEM-equivalent shell sets.

Crankshaft

The crankshaft turns combustion force into rotation and carries the whole running gear. Its main and crankpin journals run in white-metal bearings and pick up wear, ovality or scoring when the oil film is lost through low LO pressure, contamination or a wiped bearing. Camshaft & cam followers

On mechanically-timed two- and four-stroke engines the camshaft drives the fuel pumps and exhaust-valve actuators through case-hardened cam lobes and roller followers. Worn, pitted or spalled cams and rollers throw injection and valve timing off and hurt combustion and fuel economy. We supply camshaft sections, individual cams, roller guides and followers — genuine, OEM-equivalent and reconditioned. (Electronically-controlled ME and X-series engines are camshaft-less, using hydraulic actuators instead.)

Engine block & frame

The engine block — the cylinder frame and crankcase on medium-speed engines, or the bedplate-and-A-frame structure on the large two-strokes — is the backbone that carries the running gear and locates every cylinder. It rarely wears, but it can crack around the main-bearing saddles, corrode in the cooling spaces, or fret at the tie-rod and mating faces after decades of service. Identify the engine

Read the nameplate on the engine or in the ship's papers — maker, engine type and mark (Mk) number. Licence-built engines (Hyundai, Mitsui, Doosan) use the identical OEM nomenclature, so the plate builder never limits sourcing.

Pin the exact part

Give the OEM part number if you have it, or a clear name plus key measurements (bore, stroke, ring count). A nameplate photo and a photo of the worn part are the fastest route to a firm quote.

Match provenance to criticality — Alang-reconditioned for high-wear and legacy items, OEM-equivalent for consumables, genuine for class-critical parts. All three meet the maker's dimensional tolerances.

Not every component on a scrapped ship is worn out — many main-engine parts still hold plenty of service life when the vessel is retired. Here is how marine engine parts are reconditioned at Wattmare: we recover low-hour components from ships beached at Alang and bring each one back to OEM tolerance through a fixed, measurable process before it is released. Parts that fail any measurement stage are rejected, not blended in.

Step 1

Recovery from Alang

Components are removed from low-hour engines on vessels beached at Alang before demolition, so the starting stock is genuine OEM material rather than a copy. Only items with real service life left — cylinder liners, piston crowns, exhaust valve spindles, bearings, fuel equipment — are pulled for reconditioning.

Step 2

Cleaning & inspection

Each part is stripped of carbon, scale, old coatings and combustion deposits by chemical and ultrasonic cleaning back to bare parent metal. A trained inspector then examines it visually and by borescope for cracks, scoring, pitting, burn marks and corrosion, and scraps anything with obvious damage.

Step 3

Dimensional measurement

Bore gauges, micrometers and depth gauges check the survivors against the engine builder's wear limits — liner bore and ovality, journal diameters, seat widths, ring-groove clearances. Any dimension outside the OEM tolerance band is either rejected outright or flagged for machining back to size.

Step 4

Machining / honing / re-metalling

Cylinder liners are re-honed to restore the correct running-surface crosshatch, journals and sealing faces are re-ground true, and white-metal main and crosshead bearings are re-metalled and line-bored back to nominal running clearance. Machining targets the OEM nominal, not simply “cleaned up.”

NDT & pressure test

Load-bearing parts are crack-checked by non-destructive testing — magnetic-particle, dye-penetrant or ultrasonic inspection depending on the component. The cooling passages of piston crowns and liners are hydraulically pressure-tested so nothing that has to contain combustion or coolant leaves with a hidden flaw.

Certification & documentation

Final measured dimensions are recorded against the tolerance chart, and the part is tagged with its engine model, part reference and traceable batch so the buyer knows exactly what they are fitting. Marine main engines are maintained on running-hours, not calendar dates. Wear parts are checked through the scavenge ports at short intervals, pulled for a top overhaul in the 12,000–18,000 hour band, and the running gear and bearings are renewed at a major overhaul closer to 60,000–100,000 hours. The ranges below are representative windows for large slow-speed two-stroke and medium-speed four-stroke engines — use them to plan spares lead time, not as a substitute for your engine's own maintenance manual.

The two-stroke vs four-stroke marine engine split is the first thing to establish about any vessel: the slow-running two-stroke bolted to the propeller handles main propulsion, while one or more faster four-stroke medium-speed engines drive the generators. Which type you are dealing with tells you almost exactly what wear parts the ship will need.

What is the difference between genuine, OEM-equivalent and reconditioned main engine parts?
Genuine parts are produced by the original engine maker or its licensed builders and carry full OEM traceability; OEM-equivalent (aftermarket) parts are manufactured to the same drawings, materials and tolerances by specialist suppliers at lower cost; reconditioned parts are original components recovered from decommissioned engines and restored to within OEM limits, then re-inspected. All three are used routinely across the world fleet — the right choice depends on the criticality of the component, class requirements, lead time and budget. Do you supply spares for obsolete or out-of-production two-stroke engines?
Yes. A large part of the world fleet still runs legacy two-stroke designs — such as the MAN B&W MC mechanical-camshaft series and the Sulzer RTA series — that are no longer built new but remain fully serviceable, and the OEMs have committed to lifetime parts support on these families. Because such engines are frequently beached and dismantled at Alang, reconditioned cylinder liners, piston crowns, exhaust valves and bearings are often available quickly even when new-build OEM lead times run into months (see Alang ship spare parts).
How are reconditioned main engine parts inspected and certified to class?
Reconditioned parts are dimensionally checked against OEM tolerances, crack-tested by dye-penetrant or magnetic-particle inspection, and supplied with a measurement and NDT report; original maker markings, heat and cast numbers are retained for traceability. Where class approval is required, components can be re-surveyed and documented for the vessel's classification society before shipment. With proper survey documentation, reconditioned items such as turbocharger rotors and nozzle rings remain class-acceptable for legacy fleets.

Crosshead

A sliding block that links the piston rod to the connecting rod on a two-stroke engine, guiding the piston in a dead-straight line and keeping side thrust out of the combustion space.

Stuffing box

The sealing gland where the piston rod passes through the diaphragm plate, scraping oil off the rod and stopping combustion soot from contaminating the crankcase below.

Cylinder liner

The replaceable cylindrical sleeve that forms the running surface for the piston rings and contains the burning gases inside each cylinder.

Piston crown

The top section of a built-up piston that faces the flame and absorbs the full heat and pressure of every firing stroke.

Piston skirt

The lower section of the piston that guides it squarely within the liner and helps carry and position the piston rings.

Piston rod

The rigid rod that bolts the piston crown to the crosshead on a two-stroke engine, transmitting the combustion force straight down.

Connecting rod

The link joining the crosshead (or the piston, on a four-stroke) to the crankshaft, converting up-and-down motion into rotation.

Bottom-end bearing

The bearing at the crankpin end of the connecting rod — also called the big-end — that lets the rod swing on the turning crankshaft.

Main bearing

The bearings seated in the bedplate that support the crankshaft along its length and carry its load as it rotates.

Cylinder cover

The heavy casting that seals the top of the liner and houses the exhaust valve, fuel valves, and starting and relief valves.

Exhaust valve

The valve in the cylinder cover that opens to release burnt gases; on large two-strokes it is hydraulically opened and closed by an air spring.

Fuel valve / injector

The component that atomises high-pressure fuel oil and sprays it into the combustion chamber at precisely the right instant.

Camshaft

A shaft carrying shaped lobes (cams) that mechanically time the fuel pumps and exhaust valves as it turns — replaced by electronic control on the newest engines.

Chain drive

The roller-chain (or gear train) that drives the camshaft and auxiliary equipment off the crankshaft, kept at correct tension by a chain tightener.

Scavenge air

The fresh, pressurised air forced into the cylinder to sweep out exhaust gas and supply oxygen for the next combustion cycle.

Turbocharger

An exhaust-gas-driven compressor that packs extra air into the engine, raising both power output and fuel efficiency.

Cylinder lubrication

The metered feed of specially formulated cylinder oil onto the liner wall to lubricate the piston rings and neutralise the acids formed during combustion.

Tie rod

The long, pre-tensioned through-bolt that clamps the cylinder frame, columns, and bedplate into one rigid structure and carries the firing loads.
