Sondex fresh water generator spare parts

Sondex builds plate-type fresh water generators that distil sea water under vacuum using main-engine jacket cooling water as the heat source. The whole unit is built around plate packs, so the parts that decide whether it makes water are the evaporator and condenser plates, their gaskets, and the ejector that holds the vacuum. Open the shell

The generator is opened and the evaporator and condenser plate packs withdrawn for inspection.

Split the plate packs

Every titanium plate is separated and checked for scaling, pitting and cracks.

Acid-clean & inspect

Plates are acid-cleaned and descaled; pitted or cracked plates are rejected, not reused.

Step 4

Renew gaskets & ejector

New plate gaskets are fitted and the ejector nozzle and venturi renewed.

Step 5

Rebuild the pumps

Feed, brine and distillate pumps get new seals and impellers.

Vacuum-test & document

What's the difference between a plate-type and a submerged-tube FWG?

A plate-type FWG (Alfa Laval JWP, GEA SWD, Donghwa DF) evaporates and condenses across titanium plate packs — compact and easy to acid-clean. A submerged-tube FWG (Sasakura Series X, older units) uses a tube nest in a shell — larger and very robust. The spares differ: plates and gaskets versus tubes and tube plates.

Why must FWG plates be titanium?

The evaporator and condenser are in constant contact with hot sea water and brine, which pit ordinary stainless. Titanium resists chloride corrosion, so genuine marine FWG plates are titanium. We supply titanium plates matched to your model — never a cheaper substitute that will fail.

My FWG output has dropped — what's wrong?

Usually scaled evaporator plates or a weak vacuum. Scale insulates the plates and cuts evaporation; a worn ejector nozzle or low ejector-pump pressure lets the vacuum fall. Acid-clean the plates, renew the gaskets and renew the ejector nozzle — all parts we stock.

Are reconditioned FWG parts reliable?

Yes. Alang-recovered plate packs are split, acid-cleaned and inspected plate-by-plate; pitted or cracked plates are rejected, gaskets and ejector nozzles renewed, pumps rebuilt, and the unit vacuum-tested with a report. Typically 30–60% below new.
